Cleaning with Potters Impact Glass Beads Minimize

Cleaning with Potters impact glass beads

The use of glass beads for cleaning tends to strengthen the material by imparting compressive surface stress - in effect, Peening the surface. Glass beads are inert and chemically pure. Abrasives such as sand and grit clean well but can damage metal surfaces. Metallic media, even spherical types, may impart ferrous pollution to a surface. These impurities can cause stress corrosion. Small surface separations grow into stress corrosion cracks regardless of paint or other coatings.

Impact cleaning with glass beads makes it easy to clean hard-to-reach areas . Glass bead blasting can be used to combine cleaning, deburring, finishing and peening procedures into a one-step operation.

Features and benefits of Potters' impact glass beads:

  • No significant amounts of metal are removed. The impact of glass bead cleaning also smoothes surface irregularities, removes burrs, flashing and feather edges, and hardens metal surfaces through peening.
  • Chemically inert - no contamination of the work surface. Following glass bead blasting, subsequent finishing operations can proceed without further surface preparation.
  • Environmentally safe. Glass beads and uncontaminated spent media are non-toxic and harmless to the environment. Unlike many other abrasives, glass beads do not contain free silica, which can cause silicosis. Pure, spent media is suitable for clean fill and presents no additional handling problems or disposal costs.
  • Easy cleaning of hard-to-reach interstices or fillets; wide range of bead size available.
  • Can specify a wide variety of finishes.
  • Lower energy costs compared with other media.
